Peter Ellenshaw (1913-2007) was a renowned British matte painter and visual effects artist known for his work with Walt Disney Studios. He began his career as an assistant to the celebrated matte artist Walter Percy Day and quickly honed his skills in creating intricate and realistic backgrounds for films.

 

Ellenshaw's expertise became widely recognized in the 1950s when he joined Disney. He contributed to many classic films, including "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1954), "Mary Poppins" (1964), and "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (1971). His work on "Mary Poppins" earned him an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

 

In addition to his film work, Ellenshaw was an accomplished painter, creating numerous landscape and seascape paintings that have been exhibited in galleries worldwide. His ability to blend artistic talent with technical skill made him a pioneer in the field of visual effects and matte painting. Ellenshaw's legacy continues to influence and inspire artists and filmmakers today.
